Statement of Concern Regarding U.S. Position on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Japan Civil Society Network on SDGs (SDGs Japan) expresses deep concern over the recent position articulated by the United States government regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UN General Assembly on March 4, 2025, discussing a resolution commemorating the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence.
The U.S. government stated its objection to a resolution reaffirming the SDGs, arguing that such goals undermine U.S. sovereignty and conflict with the rights and interests of the American people by promoting global governance through indirect means. The U.S. delegate explicitly rejected and denounced the SDGs, despite these goals being unanimously adopted by all UN Member States, including the United States.
Given the profound environmental, economic, and social crises facing the world—and considering the critical importance of peace, which forms the foundation of all sustainable progress—the necessity for international cooperation and multilateral approaches has dramatically increased since the SDGs' adoption.
As a civil society organization committed to global sustainability, we firmly believe that the SDGs serve as an essential roadmap toward a stable and equitable future. Respecting global and public interests and safeguarding human rights are indispensable principles in our interconnected world.
Without commitment to multilateral cooperation and the pursuit of the SDGs, the prospect of a sustainable and lasting future diminishes significantly. SDGs Japan reaffirms its dedication to collaborating with other stakeholders, both domestically and internationally, to achieve a peaceful and sustainable future in which no one is left behind.
